Garbage Disposal

Garbage Disposal Experts

You’re not alone if you’ve had a problem with your garbage disposal. Most of the calls we get involved a broken or slow-running (or weird smelling) disposal, so don’t fear!

Keep in mind that kitchen sink garbage disposals are only meant to process light food residue that’s rinsed off of plates – not large amounts of food, and certainly not any other kinds of material! If your sink isn’t draining or you disposal has flat-lined, you know who to call for fast plumbing service.

Problem:

Garbage disposal hums but won’t operate properly.

Solution:

Press the reset button located on the bottom of the disposal. If this doesn’t work, turn off the power switch and shine a flashlight into the drain. Look for a foreign object like a coin, plastic twist tie, or even something as small as a staple. Remove the item with pliers or a grasping tool – not your hand!. Your disposal may also have a hex key jam clearing tool. Look for it under the sink or taped to the disposal itself. Check for a slot at the bottom of the disposal where the tool can be inserted and turned back and forth to clear the jam.

Fact:

While you’re out shopping on Black Friday each years, Drain Master Plumbing & Rooter is busy unclogging Thanksgiving from people’s kitchen sinks. That’s right – the day after Turkey Day is one the busiest of the year, and not just for 6am sales. Keep an eye on Aunt Martha if she’s lingering by the sink, especially if she won the wishbone!
