If it's overflowing right now
Turn the shut-off valve behind the toilet clockwise until it stops. If the valve won't turn, lift the tank lid and press the flapper down to stop more water entering the bowl. Then call us.
When a toilet keeps clogging
- Wipes, paper towels or other items that don't break down
- An older low-flow toilet that doesn't push enough water
- A partial blockage further down the drain line
- Roots or damage in the sewer line. If other drains back up when you flush, the problem is likely in the main line.
What not to flush
- "Flushable" wipes, baby wipes and cleaning wipes
- Paper towels and tissues
- Feminine products and cotton swabs
- Grease, cat litter and dental floss
Questions
Why does my toilet gurgle?
A gurgle usually means air is being pulled through the water in the drain, which points to a partial blockage or a vent problem. If other drains gurgle too, have the main line checked.
